Turbaned tornado: the story of Fauja Singh
Global IndiaGold

“It’s too late for me to start something new. The best years of my life have been lost,” such an excuse is often a narrative of people who don’t feel content with what they have, but are afraid to change anything.

Your best years are not necessarily youth. This is the period of life during which you finally unleash your potential and become happy.

A striking example of this is the story of Fauja Singh, nicknamed “turbaned tornado”.

A beginning of the story

In 1911, a boy named Fauja was born in the village of Beas Pind (Punjab, Jalandhar, British Raj). Back then, hardly anyone could have imagined that the kid was destined to become a global celebrity. Moreover, the main achievement of his life will be made not in that century, but in the next one.

Fauja Singh was born so weak that he learned to walk only at the age of five. Other children in the village constantly teased him and gave offensive nicknames.

However, as a teenager, Fauja tried to go jogging and even achieved good results. However, later on he became a farmer and devoted a significant part of his life to this occupation.

Rebirth

The 1990s were a turning point in the life of Fauja Singh. For several years, he experienced several tragedies: first, his wife passed away, the eldest daughter soon died, and then the fifth son died as well.

Leaving his native land, Singh moved to London with his youngest son. It was difficult for a man who had previously lived in rural areas and worked the land to get used to living in a huge city in an unfamiliar country. Isolation brought neither pleasure nor reassurance.

To cope with sudden anguish, Fauja decided to go jogging again. While jogging, he realized that he was in good shape and could compete with other runners. Then he had a dream: to take part in a marathon.

First success

Soon Fauja met a coach and started preparing for the marathon with him. The runner came wearing a three-piece suit to his first training session. The coach had to work pretty hard on the image of the mentee, and later Fauja ran already in sportswear.

In 2000, at the age of 89, Fauja Singh took part in his first major competition — London Marathon. He thought that he would have to run 26 kilometers, not knowing that the distance was indicated in miles, and 26 miles equals 42 kilometers. However, this did not scare the future champion, on the contrary, he took up training with new energy and even greater zeal.

As Fauja later recalled, the first 20 miles were easy for him, and the other six he had run while talking to God.

Worldwide recognition

Subsequently, participation in major competitions became common for Singh. In 2003, at a marathon in Canada, he set a world record in the age category of 90 years and older.

In 2004, the “turbaned tornado” was invited to participate in the Adidas advertising campaign along with football star David Beckham and legendary boxer Muhammad Ali.

At the age of 100, Fauja became the oldest person on the planet who managed to run the marathon till the end. He set a number of world, as well as European and British records at different distances in his age group. In 2016, 104-year-old Fauja Singh became a participant in Mumbai Marathon.

The athlete donates most of the revenue from competitions and advertising to charity. He says that the most important thing in the world is to take care of people, as well as spirit and body.

The best moment is now

The example of Fauja Singh demonstrates that age is not an obstacle in order to realize your dream. Success and fame may come in 100 years.
